Metalcore is a broad fusion genre of extreme metal and hardcore punk. The name is a blend of the names of the two genres, distinguished by its emphasis on breakdowns,〔About Entertainment. The sound is polished and the lyrics range from personal to political issues.."〕 which are slow, intense passages that are conducive to moshing.〔 Pioneering metalcore bands—such as Earth Crisis and Integrity,〔HXC Revolution. 〕 both of which had formed before 1990—are described as leaning more toward hardcore, whereas later bands—such as Killswitch Engage, Bullet for My Valentine, Underoath, Avenged Sevenfold, All That Remains, Trivium, As I Lay Dying, Parkway Drive, The Devil Wears Prada and Bury Tomorrow—are described as leaning more towards metal.
